For many years the Driscoll brothers were mentioned in several Only Fools and Horses episodes. We knew they were hard and many would run scared of any contact with them. Then in 1989 we were given a face to the names. Danny and Tony were quite a contrast. Today we are going to look at Roy Marsden Aka Danny Driscoll (The Tall One).

Danny Driscoll - Roy Marsden

In the Episode Little Problems Tony and Danny Driscoll are now given a revealing in person and what a treat it was. What a cracking episode it was. Del’s gone and got himself into a bit of bother over some hooky mobile phones with the less than understanding Driscoll brothers Tony and Danny. Unless Del comes up with 2,000 Pounds pretty sharpish they’re going to take care of him and of course they didn’t hold back, providing Del with a voice for the Bee Gees karaoke night.

Since then they have been given further storylines by means of the Green Green Grass as they have been involved in several plots to track down Boycie. These episodes were namely:

Home Brew (2009)

Brothers and Sisters (2006)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo Clock (2005)

This week Roy Marsden is set to star in The Hobbit, in Reading from April 19-24.

As well as a glittering acting career that’s seen him be one of the top telly detectives and have guest spots in much-loved shows including Foyle’s War, Space: 1999 and Only Fools and Horses, he’s an accomplished director.

Roy Marsden Appeared in Space 1999

You can see the fruits of his work next week as the Wycombe Swan hosts his adaptation of J R R Tolkein’s The Hobbit.

The 69-year-old RADA-trained actor thinks that there is no real difference between directing and acting.

“But in directing you have a complete responsbility to the play,” he says.

“It’s bit of a daft image,” he continues, “you’re a midwife, helping to give birth to this play. Then, as soon you’ve given birth to it, in a way your job is over. It’s theirs [the actors], it no longer belongs to you.”

Roy says when he comes back to the show after a week or two of performing, the actors have moved the play on.

The play, which is on a national tour, has been a huge hit with all ages and it’s something that pleased Roy.

“Young children are not used to being in theatre,” he says. “You expect them to be texting. But they’re not, they’re engaged. It’s terrific.”

What do we know about Roy Marsden? He was born on 25 June 1941 in Stepney, London and is probably best known for his portrayal of Adam Dalgliesh in the Anglia Television dramatisations of P. D. James’s detective novels.

Updated : Boycie and Marlene on tour NOW

If you’re a fan of the show you wouldn’t want to miss this unique tour

The show, entitled Boycie and Marlene, played by John Challis and Sue Holderness, will allow audiences the chance to interact with the two only fools and horses characters, as well as watch them perform a comedy routine.

Boycie and his Marlene will recreate on stage some of the most famous moments from the two television comedies only fools and horses and The Green Green Grass. Additionally there is a special bonus

John Challis and Sue Holderness will let the audience in on some of the secret moments that did not appear on our TV screens. After the performance, the audience will have the chance to ask questions of the two stars about their experiences working on the shows.

Boycie and Marlene from Only Fools and Horses are travelling the country telling their story. They spoke to DAVID MILLS about their current tour.

THEY may have spent most of their marriage at each other’s throats, but Boycie and Marlene are still an item after more than 25 years.

And one of television’s longest-serving on screen couples is showing no signs of heading for divorce either, with tour dates planned across the UK this month and next.

An audience with Boycie and Marlene tells the story of how the characters came about and relives some of their best moments from Only Fools and Horses and spin-off The Green Green Grass.

The idea for the tour came about after John Challis and Sue Holderness, who are not married in real life, had each done individual shows based on their characters on cruise liners.

John said: “People seemed very interested in it so we had the idea of putting our two individual shows together and seeing if people on land liked it as much as people on the ocean did.”

Members of the audience even get to quiz the pair after the performance.

Sue said: “One of the things audiences like is the chance to ask us questions. But we hope a lot of those questions are answered during the performance, such as how we got these roles. We had no idea after all these years the characters would become the national treasures they are.”

While John and Sue have appeared in countless theatre and television productions, it was in Only Fools and Horses that the couple found fame.

One of British television’s finest ever sitcoms, the south-east London based comedy ran for more than 20 years and viewers never seem to tire of the endless repeats.

Most people thought Only Fools and Horses had finally finished in 1996 when Del and Rodney became millionaires, but John Challis felt the show had to go on.

He said: “I didn’t think you could leave Del with all that money. I always thought it had to come full circle and he had to finish back at square one with nothing.

“Although it was quite a shock to be told five years later we were going to get together and do another three shows.”

Boycie, a second-hand car dealer from Lewisham, is best known for his signature laugh, which he copied from a woman he knew with “a machine gun laugh”.

John said: “Everybody does impressions of that, kids are doing it to me all the time. It sounds like a flock of sheep sometimes.”

He says he would jump at the chance to do another episode of Only Fools and Horses, while Sue says she will never get fed up with Marlene.

Sue said: “I’d like to be playing Marlene when I’m staggering around on my Zimmer frame in my 80s. I hope she’ll still be as lively in her leopard skin high heels.”

Boycie and Marlene are two of the most popular characters from Only Fools and Horses.

Series 1 – Episode 1 - Keep on Running

A great start to this new sit-com spin-off from John Sullivan.

So how can he get Marlene and Boycie ourt of the Only Fools and Horses Peckham surroundings and out into the country?

This episode makes the connection, and does it well. We are introduced to a grown up Tyler with attitude and there new dog replacing Dukie ( a nice touch – you can see a picture of Dukie in there kitchen look closely)

The story starts off with Denzil turning up and after a general discussion, it becomes clear the the Driscoll Brothers are after there grass, which clearly makes Boycie feel very uneasy.

In no time at all Boycie has sold his business and his house and is moving the family out to the country. But it wont ever be that simple as Boycie isn’t naturally your average gentleman farmer in Shropshire.

With some nice little references to Delboy, for example they spend all night trying to find there new Winterdown Farm using his Satelite navigation system.

The sitcom looks set to now make it on its own

Well done, it looks like Mr Sullivan has pulled it off again

Estimates of around 10 million watched it on its first transmission

Green, Green, Grass EXCLUSIVE Review

Well, could it possibly work?

A spin-off episode from the accolade sitcom, Only Fools and Horses? Well only one man could come close to such a feat; John Sullivan. Certainly one of the clear strengths of Only Fools and Horses over the years is the extraordinary success of introducing great characters into the show.

From the beginning of OFAH we met up with Trigger. A few episodes later Boycie was introduced. By series 3 and 4, Denzil, Sid, Trig, Mike and of course Boycie and Marlene, have become household names. From this foundation, Green, Green, Grass develops.

On 28th November 2004 at Teddington Studios, London, a pilot for the show was filmed. I was fortunate to be among the 300 strong audience. As with OFAH, the filming was performed before a live audience to gauge the comedy based on genuine laughter and not the canned variety.

The studio set involved an internal kitchen for Boyce’s Peckham based home and a huge mansion room acting the Boycies’ new residence. The production team was very experienced as many of them had worked on previous episodes of OFAH. In fact, it so easily could of been the filming of an OFAH episode (never say never).

Did it work?

Well, as with many others, it’s easy to be sceptical, especially as I’m hugely passionate for OFAH. The opening scene was classic Sullivan. We see a very normal everyday scene in the Boyce household, and then BANG, he’s got you, resulting in deafening laughter from the audience.

Throughout the filming the connections to OFAH, put a warm smile on my face. It’s so good to hear Del is still flogging dodgy gear. Other connections I won’t mention, as this would be giving too much away. More plusses include an excellent performance from the now grown up Tyler, (Boycie and Marlene’s 15 year old son). Gradually the story unfolded, to explain why Boycie and Marlene end up in a mansion in the country.

The pilot episode was funny throughout and certainly provided some very funny moments. Having said that it was moving from an OFAH scene to its own sitcom and therefore needed to establish a new situation to set it into. It did just that!

The final scenes gave us a glimpse of the type of sitcom Green, Green, Grass will become. It will work on the basis that Boycie, Marlene and Tyler will find it hard to adjust to village life, there is clearly plenty of room for a complete series to thrive on.

I have to say that both the quality of writing, and the fact it did work for me means we may well be seeing a lot more of Mr and Mrs Boyce over the coming months.

Boycie returns for Fools spin-off

Marlene and Boycie will move out of Peckham

The BBC confirmed that a pilot episode about the dodgy car dealer and his long-suffering wife is being filmed.

If the pilot, written by Only Fools and Horses creator John Sullivan, is a success it will become a series.

The actors, John Challis and Sue Holderness, are the only ones from the original series taking part.

The stars of Only Fools and Horses, David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst, will not be involved.

Green, Green Grass will see Boycie and Marlene moving out of Peckham for a more refined life in the country, along with their son Tyler.

‘Never say never’

The pilot will go into production next year, with a potential series being ready for broadcast in 2005.

Writer Sullivan penned seven series of the hugely successful Only Fools and Horses, beginning in 1981.

There have also been a number of Christmas specials, which continued to attract very large audiences, drawing 15.5 million viewers on Christmas Day 2003.

It recently was chosen as Britain’s best sitcom in a best sitcom poll, beating the likes of Blackadder, Porridge and Dad’s Army.

A BBC spokesman said there were no plans for any more episodes of Only Fools and Horses, but added “never say never”.

Boycie launches a new lifeboat appeal

The birthday surprise of a lifetime for TV star John Challis, Boycie from the hit series Only Fools and Horses, turned into a huge boost for the £1.8 million appeal for our new Tamar-class lifeboat.

The Lizard lifeboat web-site has many photos and video of the event so take a look on http://www.thelizardlifeboat.org.uk/ If anyone wants to make a donation they would be glad of the support. a donate button can be found throughout the site

According to the Lizard Web site

Boycie, overwhelmed at his VIP welcome by volunteers at our remote lifeboat station, immediately agreed to become ambassador for the charity’s appeal just as it was being officially launched. The money raised will go towards the £2.7 million cost of a Tamar class all-weather lifeboat.

The visit on Sunday 16 August was timed to coincide with John Challis’s 67th birthday and was arranged by his wife, Carol as a surprise. She knew it had been John’s lifelong ambition to visit The Lizard lifeboat in particular, and to support the work of the volunteers. She agreed on his behalf that he would become an ambassador for the new appeal but he knew nothing of the tie-up until he was greeted by RNLI Coxswain Phil Burgess when he arrived at Kilcobben Cove.

Once in the lifeboat station, which will be replaced in a huge build programme starting next spring, Phil asked him if he would be willing to support the appeal. When he agreed, he was surprised with a special announcement from the Coxswain who said:

‘ I believe I’m right in thinking it’s been a lifelong ambition to go on exercise with The Lizard crew. Well never mind Jim’ll Fix It, how about ‘Phil’ll Fix It?’

To a spontaneous round of applause from the volunteer crew and shorehelpers, the famous Boycie then stepped aboard the station’s relief Tyne class all-weather lifeboat The Lady Rank and put to sea to see the work of the charity at first hand.

On his return, Boycie was presented with a huge chocolate and strawberry birthday cake made by RNLI fundraiser Jill Cuff. Still dressed in his RNLI oilskins and lifejacket, he then spoke of his delight at supporting the new appeal:

‘I have literally been blown away today. It has always been my ambition to launch down the slipway on exercise and today my 67th birthday this has become a reality. Coincidentally the fundraising appeal for the new lifeboat begins today. It will be a Tamar class all-weather lifeboat and we need £1.8 million.’ Then in the character of Boycie he added: ‘Worth every penny.’

‘I’m honoured and thrilled to be part of this appeal. I hope today will be the start of a very happy relationship between the RNLI and me. I look forward to being closely involved with The Lizard lifeboat station in particular and I’m am glad my wife volunteered my services!’

He then lapsed back into character to surprise Phil Burgess:

‘And now for a little surprise for one of these wonderful crewmembers Philip I’m told you have been committed (much laughter at this point) seriously, you have been working tirelessly for this lifeboat station over the last 37 years, as crew and then for twenty of those years as Coxswain. We now have a presentation for you.’

At this point the gathering was joined by Tom Mansell, RNLI Training Divisional Inspector for the south west, who produced a special certificate marking Phil’s 20 years as Coxswain. Presenting it,

John Challis added:

‘You’ve made hundreds of memorable shouts in all weathers to save lives at sea. You lead a large team of similarly committed volunteer crew and helpers and our thanks should go to them as well. I’m proud to present you with this certificate and to say thank you from all of us.’

Mike Lord, RNLI Chairman at The Lizard, says:

‘This appeal for our new boat is a huge task for a small community like ours and support from Boycie gives us a wonderful boost right at the start. We will need every penny to raise the £1.8 million we need to give our crew a faster and ever safer lifeboat and I do hope people will be generous. You can donate on line via our station website. It would be wonderful if people could even organise fundraising activities themselves every contribution will be vital.’
