To Hull and Back Episode Review

Brief: Just a simple courier job says Boycie and Abdul but the Trotter’s life on the ocean wave doesn’t go completely to plan. They run into their old friend Slater ‘The Slag’ but it isn’t all plain sailing for him either.

Boycie and Abdul pitch a diamond scam to Del Boy, who immediately turns them down.

That is until they offer him a £15,000 cut of the estimated £150,000 sale of the stone on the UK market. Del finds himself designated as the courier between Holland and Britain.

No sooner has Del enlisted a reluctant Rodders, he hears his old foil Chief Inspector Slater is eyeing Boycie and Abdul as drug dealers. Del decides to hide undetected in the back of Denzil’s van.

Denzil then getting in and driving them to Hull (pursued by Rodney) was not part of the plan. Thinking quickly, they hire a boat, and let Uncle Albert guide them to Amsterdam.

Overcoming counterfeit cash, Albert’s amnesia, it’s only the arrival of Slater that scuppers them. Despite this, it’s Del who has the last laugh.

Episode Observations

In To Hull and Back, About half way through the episode when the Trotters have just arrived in Holland, it cuts back to Boycie & Abdul in the Car Office. Abdul is worrying about if they got there ok, and if maybe they have sunk. In response Boycie says “No, no, they’ve got their uncle Albert”. The thing is how do Boycie and Abdul know that they brought Uncle Albert with them, the supposedly last time they saw each other was in the lorry, and as far as they were aware of they were going by Air and only allowing Rodney to go with him. This confirmed at the end when Del explaines to Boycie that they just have “got lost in the middle of the North Sea..”, to their supprise, as well they only thought of the idea at the last minute, and so had limited time to bother telling them.Later when Slater is in his office and is rounding off the suspects on the white flip chart, before Hoskins comes in, it shows a list of the most likely suspects, with: Trigger – Too Daft; and Denzil – Nervous Breakdown, but how on earth does Slater know that Denzil thinks he is suffering a nervous breakdown all of sudden and they are never seen near each other, and there wouldn’t be any reasonable way of anyone, including Del Boy, of wanting to let Slater know of this, because of his on going Diamond activities.

In To Hull and Back, Del, Rodney and Albert are in the flat after coming back from Holland and Rodney shows Del the £15,000 that he said he picked up when they were running around the table but when we see them running around the table he quite clearly doesn’t pick the 15K up!

In To Hull and Back, when Rodney spots the Zebrugge to Hull Ferry, he’s steering the boat, Del’s at the front of the ship and Albert’s below deck, yet seconds later Rodney’s at the front of the ship with Del and Albert’s Steering!

In To Hull and Back, In To Hull and Back, When Rodaney suggests they find the way to Holland by stars Del says “Oh yeah, I saw that in the Onedin Line”. This is an in-joke because the guy who plays Van Cleef later in the episode used to be in the Onedin Line!

In To Hull and Back, In the flat scene at the end, when Albert tips the 2 Diamonds on to Rodneys hand Rodney says “Whos a pretty Boy?” which was actually Denzils first episode!!! As he was in To Hull And Back i find this very ironic!

In To Hull and Back, when in Sids cafe Slater says to Del “are you sure you dont want any food?” and Del replies , no, yet a few minutes later you see del eating a bacon sandwich, and Sid asks Del for 32p.

In To Hull and Back, Near the end when Del arrives back at boycies, Where are they? We assume that it is Boycies car place, but when slater opens the door we see a pub- layout, yet if it is the nags head howcome we have never seen that room since?

In To Hull and Back, When Albert’s in the Nags head talking to Slater’s mum,she remarks how her Husband never got over Slater joining the Police force and “how bloody glad she was, when they put him away” yet in Slater’s return in “class of 62″ he says his Dad died when he was inside, and he explain’s why they would’nt give him Compassionate parole (the letter Slater’s Mum wrote)

In To Hull and Back, There is no laughter soundtrack on the entire video.

In To Hull and Back, When denzil sees the trooters on the start off there sea journey he is sat on the east coast and the boat is traveling north. holland is to the south!.

In To Hull and Back, when Del and Rodney are in the market trying to sell the watches, Rodney is getting some more out just after Del says “there gonna be a mad rush in a minute” the suitcase opens away from the punters, but when they notice the copper Rodney opens the suitcase facing the punters and Del chucks in the watches from the table.

In To Hull and Back, when hoskins is paying for his sandwich carefully watch the length of sids fag, go on its true!!.

In To Hull and Back, Why doesent Rodney get the money that del throws out the window?!?!, he could have recovered alot of it!.

In To Hull and Back, at the docks when denzil is waiting at the zebara crossing and sees Del you can see the crossing is just a roll been put down you can see the folds.

In To Hull and Back, It has always bothered me, but how on earth could both Rodney in the 3-wheel van and Denzil in his lorry make it all the way from Peckham to Hull without stopping? Surely at least Rodney would have had to stop for petrol (I doubt the 3-wheel van could make it that far even on a full tank) meaning that he would have lost Denzil on the motorway, or Denzil as a long distance driver would have had to stop for a rest meaning Rodney could have caught up with him. Or could Rodney not have managed to overtake Denzil and get him to stop and let Del out?

In To Hull and Back, When the trotters, boycie and abdul tried to make a run from slater the moneywas left on the table but later on at the end rodney had the money in his pocket.

In To Hull and Back, when Denzil drives away at the traffic lights, Del is upset and wonders why Denzil hasn’t let him fill the truck up. Rodney reminds Del of the awful things that Del has done to Denzil in the past 1.Ruined his Wedding reception (“Who’s a pretty boy?”) 2.Broken up his marriage to Corrine (she couldn’t appear anymore because the lady who played ‘Corrine’ died) 3.Flooded his kitchen (“Who’s a pretty boy?”again) and 4.Stole his £2,000 redundancy money (“As one door closes”).

In To Hull and Back, Slater is banged up for diamond smuggling at the end, this is nicely linked up in “The class of ’62″ 5 years later when Slater is out of prison he still has possession of some of the diamonds and this story line links well with the previous one.

In To Hull and Back, Jeff Stevenson plays PC Parker, but comes back as the comedian in “Little Problems”.

In To Hull and Back, keep an eye on the length of Sid’s cigarette while young Terry Hoskins is ‘paying’ for his breakfast.

In To Hull and Back, At the end of the episode before Del chucks the money off the balcony Rodney tells Del they should invest it, a fact which he later denies in the final scene.

In To Hull and Back, In the scene where Slater and his henchmen are checking the lorries for thieves Rodney is seen to be observing very clearly what is going. Why didn’t Slater and his gang spot the yellow van ? Rodney responds facially when Slater homes in on Denzil’s lorry so how on earth did Slater miss it ! To top it all in the next scene Slater says he went looking for Del’s van and it was missing!

In To Hull and Back, In the last scene has Del, Rodney and Albert in their flat. For once, we see the wall behind the TV. Notice a fireplace on the wall. However, in Time On Our Hands, we again see the wall behind the TV, but there is no fireplace this time!

In To Hull and Back, When Del-Boy rents the boat it is called INGE but when Denzil sees the boat from the cliff- top the name on the side of the boat is now called LINKE!

In To Hull and Back, near the end Rodney does not pick up the money from the table, he just walks out the room without going near it.

A Royal Flush Episode Review

Brief: Rodney dates Victoria, the Duke of Mulberry’s daughter, & Delboy starts making plans for the wedding of the year. With a Date at the opera and shooting with a sawn-off shot gun from Higgy Higgins, she’s bound to be impressed.

Transmitted: 25.12.1986
Duration: 75 minutes
Viewing Figures: 18.8 million

Rodney meets Vicky, a seemingly impoverished artist who it transpires is the daughter of the Duke of Maylebury.

Having obtained a pair of tickets to the sold-out production of Carmen, Rodders seems to have deeply impressed Vicky. She is less taken by the presence of Del and his peroxide blonde dolly bird. Especially when they open the crisps.

Vicky then invites Rodney to a party at the Duke’s country home, and it seems romance may be on the cards. Then Del Boy turns up, hits the vino-plonko and ruins everything for his little brother.

Episode Observations

In A Royal Flush, When Del is flogging the dodgy cutlery in the market, look at the extra in the green wooley hat and glasses. It’s Norman Pace from the comedy duo Hale and Pace.

In A Royal Flush, Look behind Rodney and Vicky as they enter the theatre for the Gala performance. A small crowd has gathered across the road to watch the filming!

In A Royal Flush, in reply to Kathryn Dunne, you mention that the lifts are on the right hand side but in homesick, margret goes to the left for the lifts. But if you watch Homesick all the way through, Del mentions that the lifts were broken so margret must have been going to the stairs on the left. just a possibility anyway.

In A Royal Flush, it is clear that the lifts are really close to the flat on the right hand side, yet in Homesick Margaret exits the flat to the left to go to the lifts!

In A Royal Flush, The sawn off shot gun borrowed off Higgy Higgins is actually a full length pump action shotgun.Which wouldn`t be much good for concealment whilst entering banks.

In A Royal Flush, Same actor playing the small part of programme seller at the opera as played the even smaller part of bowling club woman in Ashes To Ashes.

In A Royal Flush, we see Del ruins Rodney’s suit when watching the opera by putting ice-cream on it. Rodney is wearing the same suit (with the ice-cream stain on!) another day at the dinner! Surely Rodney would have washed it if he wanted to impress the Duke of Mallbrey?

In A Royal Flush, ‘Sid’s Cafe’ must have made “Quite a lot of bunce” to coin a DelBoy phrase. Check it out in “The long legs of the law” – its tiny. There’s only room for a few people. Then have a gander at ‘Sid’s Cafe’ in “A Royal flush” – it’s massive – Sid’s rushed off his feet! But then I looked at the Cafe in “Dates” towards the end when Del finds out that Raquels’s a stripper – It’s gone back to the old cafe.

In A Royal Flush, their is a blonde couple ahead of Rodney and Vicky in the ticket queue, the same actors are used later at the dinner table, Giles discusses Chelsea with Rodney and Del.

In A Royal Flush, In the opera house Rodney says to Del that someone has ordered a kissagram – meaning June but he met June – Debbie’s mum in Happy Returns so he’ll have not only known June but will have known Del knew her as well. As Rodney also knew that Del got 4 tickets he should have been able to guess that June was with Del.

In A Royal Flush, Re: Andrew Lisle’s comment above: June – maybe Rodney didn’t recognize her w/ blonde hair. In Happy Returns June had dark hair.

In A Royal Flush, at the start of the scene at the dinner table, a guest asks Henry who the young chap is with Victoria. The scene switches to the other end of the table for a brief moment. Take a look at Del. He’s in a right mess, all undone, no napkin, hair messed up, yet the next shot of Del, just after Patterson walks on the peas, Dels hair is now in place and he still has his napkin on.

In A Royal Flush, at the opera scene where Del is whistling – the whistling soundtrack is not in time with Dels mouth movements – perhaps it is not David Jason so tunefully whistling.

In A Royal Flush, When they get back to the flat at the end of the episode, Rodney moans to Del that “you only went and told the joke about the Irish bloke on the skiing holiday”. But Del never told the Joke– the Duke interrupted him before he was able to tell it.

In A Royal Flush, At the dinner scene when Del is rubbing his finger around the glass to show that they are pukka crystal, it is the people at the other end of the table who appear to hear it first whereas it should be those closest to Del.

A Royal Flush Script

The script will be downloadable from here

Did You Know?

It is not David Jason whistling in the opera scene but Fred Tomlinson over-dubbed whistle.

This episode has never been filmed in front of a live audience and still lacks a complete sound track.

A Royal Flush on Location

This appears in 2 episodes, one maybe isnt commonly known as it was only ever broadcast once back in 1986 when they are seen going into the Theatre Royal – Drury Lane as well as it being featured in A Royal Flush

Episode Observations

In The Frogs Legacy, When Del offers Mr Jahan a drink. Mr Jahan replies by insisting on a non- alcoholic because of his religion presumely a Muslim. Later in the scene Mr Jahan is seen drinking beer ( a alcoholic drink ). The drink brought by Del.

In The Frogs Legacy, when Renee approaches Boycie, he says “Who the bloody hell is this woman?”, but later on he says he remembers her from years back.

In The Frogs Legacy, At Triggers niece’s wedding, you can see that Mike is standing with a tea towel drying glasses. Surely as he has been asked a guest he wouldn’t be doing the serving or washing up!

In The Frogs Legacy, In the frogs legacy they are talking to mike trying to get him to by a computer that dont work. The leaflet they are holding doesn’t have any writing on it.

In The Frogs Legacy, when Del asks Mr Jahan to take a seat to discuss the computer, look carefully at Del’s cigar. You will notice David Jason accidentally drop some ash on to his coat. Watch the actor playing Mr Jahan gently smile when this happens.

In The Frogs Legacy, when Del and Rodney are at the bar trying to sell a computer to Mike, Del is telling Mike that it ‘processes all your data’ while reading from the back of the leaflet he is holding, but when the camera moves you clearly see the leaflet is blank.

In The Frogs Legacy, When Boycie arrives in the market he says to Del and Trigger “Another fine day in Gotham City”. Maybe he knew Del and Rodders led a secret double life as No VATman and the Boy Plonker (as revealed in Heroes & Villians)!

In The Frogs Legacy, when they walk through the graveyard near the end of the episode, notice that the angle of the sun casts a shadow in the total opposite direction to the scene when Rodney joins Del on the beach. Clearly the shots show the sun in totally different areas of the sky.

In The Frogs Legacy, Albert is meant to be smoking a pipe while in the van, just before Del reveals the whereabouts of the lost bullion, but the pipe doesn’t seem to be there. There’s no smoke in the van, only on the close-ups of Rodney show smoke. One reason may be Buster Merryfield doesn’t smoke in real life.

In The Frogs Legacy, While Del and Mr Jahan chat in the pub about a job for Rodney, one scene he has a glass then it disappears and then reappears again.

Uncle Albert’s birthday looms on the horizon, and Del Boy books The Nag’s Head for private drinks and a party.

Trigger surprises everyone by inviting a date he met through an agency. This arouses Del’s curiosity and soon he too has a date from the match-making company.

Rodney takes the initiative by going for the ‘James Dean’ look, though this ends in disaster due to an encounter with some punks.

Things look rosy for Del though. His date with Raquel Turner (unemployed actress) goes swimmingly… until it turns out she is works as a strippergram twice a week. Despite a small run in with the police, love conquers all in the end.

Episode Observations

In Dates, Del storms out of The Nags Head after finding out that the stripper he booked was Raquel he opens and slams the van door. When he closes it you notice the window is open. Why would you go into the pub for the night and leave all the windows open?

In Dates, on the video cover they spell duval with an E. Del clearly states no E in the episode.

In Dates, the cafe is the one seen in the 1982 episode “The Long Legs Of The Law” but in the 1985 Christmas Special “To Hull and Back” it is a completely different cafe, and the same applies with “A Royal Flush”, then in Dates, it goes back to the old cafe. Make your mind up Sid where you want to base your cafe.

In Dates, when Albert says to Rodney about his date” where u taking her scrumping” as he says those line del boy says them, i think he was reading alberts part in his head but didnt realise that he was lip reading.

In Dates, when del first hands over his flowers to raquel, we see that they are a fairly big bunch and they are mainly the same colour, but later on when we are in her flat they have changed completely in size and their colour and we know they are the same flowers because she even says they are.

In Dates, The police station in this episode is the same building the BBC used for the bank in the 1984 Young Ones episode ‘Summer Holiday’.

In Dates, At the end of the episode when Raquel leaves carrying her suitcase, it’s the same house Vimal lived at in “Cash and Curry”.

In Dates, When Del’s waiting for Raquel under the clock at Waterloo Station, you can clearly see he’s had is Hair cut,yet for the rest of the episode it’s the same length as it was before.

In Dates, when Albert asks Rodney where he’s taking Nerys on their Date, watch Del when Albert says “where you taking her, strumping” you can clearly see Dell Miming the words!

In Dates, Just After The Scene Where Rodney “Jumps” The Bridge you See The Van Come Around The Corner And There Is NO ONE Sat Next To Rodney!

In Dates, In The Scene In The Pub Near The Begining, When Trigger Walks In In His Blue Suit Watch As He Goes To Grab A Glass All Ready On The Bar, But It Goes Wrong As “Nervous” Nerris Takes It Away Before He Reaches It!

In Dates, When rodney jumps over the bridge followed by the thugs you see the roof rack come off, but in the very next shot the roofrack is firmly attached!

In Dates, towards the end when the police are entering the pub, you can clearly see thet the police woman is wearing a black tie but after del has ripped her top open there is no sign of the tie!

In Dates, When the police question Del just before he leaves go to Raquels, he thinks that Albert has set him up.There is a brief shot of the police car parked outside.Behind it is Dels van. There is no way the police car could park there with the van being right behind it so the van must have been parked there after the police car.

In Dates, regarding the joke ordering a bum and rack and being lucky not to have ordered a Bucks Fizz – was also used in a Royal Flush!.

In Dates, the scene where Rodney is speeding away from the people in the red car with Nervous Nerys, Rodney dodges the car in front and driving over the cones while going through traffic lights you can see a stunt man driving the van with a inflatable doll ment to be Nerys.

In Dates, look at the scene where Rodney and nerys are in the van zooming over the hill geting chased my the yobs look closely you can see a ramp where the stunt man went over, just before they took off.

In Dates, at the beginning when Mike and Boycie are in the pub, Mike is reading a paper. If you look at the back page headline you’ll see it reads”HOWDY PARTNER”. Later in the episode, weeks later, when Del meets Raquel in Sid’s cafe he is reading the same paper.

In Dates, when Rodney picks up Nervous Nerris in the van you see him taking a puff from his roll-up, but clearly it is not lit, there is no smoke to be seen until the scene outside the van when stage smoke wafts across the camera.

In Dates, When Del is first seen leaving the nags head to see Trigger with a girl, the front of the nags head has no turning to the right of the pub. But when he is taken away by the police car later on, they come out of the back of the pub & down a street on the right of the nags head…fast road works!

Did You Know?

Dates is John Sullivans favourite episode

Dates won a BAFTA ‘Best Comedy’ Award in March 1989.

On Location

A different view of the stunt being filmed.

It is in fact filmed around Brabazon Road in Filton, Bristol. The scene where Rodney jumps a red light and the police car hits another car is SHELLARD ROAD, Filton, BS34 7LU and the scenes where Rodney drives past Trigger sweeping leaves and where he almost hits the lads in the red car is Roycroft Road which adjoins Shellard Road. You can see a very yellow house in the background of these sceness which in reality makes it a VERY short car chase!!!

I live in Shellard Road and although the old grey houses in the background of these scenes have now been replaced with new houses, the lay-by (parking spaces) in which Rodney drives through some road-cones are still here. It is definitely not Richmond, Surrey like your site states.

The dual-carriageway Rodney and Nerys drive down is the A4174 which is about 50metres away from my house at the end of Shellard Road.

I havent figured out where the railway bridge is yet but I guarantee it wont be far away. It doesnt seem the producers went very far to make these scenes and there is a railway line nearby too.

I will email you a photo soon if you wish so you can add it to your site.

By Andy George

PS, you can see all the roads in the map below. (and even the railway line!)

This road appears in Dates during the chase by the gang of “punks” in the middle of the episode. It’s actually Talbot Road, Iseworth, Richmond. The first image shows the bump that is seen when Rodney flies over the road being chased, the scound is where the roadworks were seen during the scene.

Let this one pass you by…..

Cassandra organises a dinner party, inviting her ‘yuppie’ boss and his wife in the hope of getting a promotion. Del and Uncle Albert soon arrive to put their feet firmly in their mouths and ruin the chances of that.

Despite it being Rodney and Cassandra’s first wedding anniversary, Rodders agrees to go on the annual Jolly Boys Outing to Margate.

The outing goes as well as can be expected considering the driver gets drunk, Rodney gets arrested, and the radio bought from Trotters Independent Traders blows up the coach.

Forced to stay the night by this twist of fate, Del encounters his lost love Raquel, who is now working as magician’s assistant.

As one Trotter rekindles his love life, the other returns to find Cassandra entertaining her boss at home. Punching first, and asking questions letter, Rodney blows it. Again.

Episode Observations

In the Jolly Boys Outing, the scene where they are in the coach driving down the hill they are all ready in margate ,when they stop at the pub(the roman galley). that is a bout10 miles before margate!

In the Jolly Boys Outing, When we see Delboy, Rodney and Albert looking up the steps to the Villa Bella, there are some cars parked just behind them! Yet when the camera angle changes to show the lighting hitting the hotel, there is clearly no cars!

In the Jolly Boys Outing, if you listen to the part where del and denzel are shouting in the pub car park..you can hear del say..”we’ll be here all day and all night” without moving his lips.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, When the coach is travelling towards Margate, Del says that they are only ten minutes from the half way house and in the background noise is the song 2 4 6 8 motorway by Tom Robinson band. The song is still playing as the coach pulls into the pub car park a full ten minutes later, Im pretty sure that the song is not that long.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, When we first see the Jolly Boy’s coach and everyone is singing “Down Down” at one point the camera shows Del singing, he turns around to talk to mike, but he clearly says something else yet the dubbing is still singing (if you get what i mean!)

In the Jolly Boys Outing, When Del throws The Great Raymondo’s suitcase out the window, Del later hears that it hit Boycie, Mike etc, well sureley we would of herd them call out or scream or something when it hits them!

In the Jolly Boys Outing, On the coach when Mike says “The main petrol line runs under there!”, Boycie isn’t wearing glasses. When the ‘Musta’ car radio explodes, everybody recoils in fright including Boycie who is suddenly now wearing sunglasses. Then in the next shot, they’re off again. Make your mind up Boycie.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, in this episode albert tells cassy about his war days!!! and how he smashed into a german boat! (this turns out to be sid in the germans boat) however in “hole in one” in the court they say he spent the best part of the war on the isle of man! and in “if they could see us now” rodders and del are sorry that they didnt take albert on holiday with them, but then say he never owned a passport!

In the Jolly Boys Outing, at the start, when Del and Albert are talking to Cassandra about the Dinner. Cassandra says that she thought Rodney had made an arrangement for another date. But then when we see Rodney and Alan talking at the firm, Rodney says that he has Invited Del and Albert, Which he couldn’t of if he had arranged another date.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, a few probably too minor ones off the top of my head(indeed!) Jevon digs at Albert early on about knowing about the rail strike so at least he could have reminded all the others! Certainly neither he nor Mickey seem any less surprised when the coach party reach the station. Also regarding the rail strike, would that have stopped Joanne necessarily from going to her parents(It’s convenient that Steven isn’t going anyway but this is quibbling really I guess!) Back to Jevon & Mickey(& Denzil), don’t think We got the impression of their being amused when the coach blew up in the way they convey at the guest house. Is there a continuity error regarding the complimentary nightclub tickets? Well, I suppose Del could have sold them & still gone there(after telling the others too). When Del & Rodney discuss Del’s venture with Jumbo Mills, Del mentions The Man From Atlantis which I think came long after Jimbo emigrated but it’s not clear Del really means it about this complaint from mothers.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, the direction of the coach changes during the song on the drive to Margate. After leaving the police station the coach is heading back towards London (A2) but the quick cut to Albert suggests the coach is going back the other way.If you look at the long shots then the sea would be on the drivers side but for Albert the sea front is on the other side (coach going right to left on the screen)The second long shot with the big wheel briefly show the roundabout that they were going past(extreme left of screen at the start of the shot)Of course a knowledge of Margate would make this a lot easier to explain!.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, Only a few seconds after the coach blows up you can hear the sirens of the fire engines. So in just a few seconds the brigade has been called out, had to get the engine out and start driving to where the burnt out coach is. How likely is that.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, it clearly states that Rodders and Cassandra have been maried 1 year, and this episode is set in the summer of 1989, whereas in “Little Problems” the marriage certificate states the date as 15th January 1989.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, when the drivers gets drunk Denzil says he will drive the bus only on one condition – that the driver drives it back. When they are about to leave for Peckham why then is Denzil sitting on the drivers seat?

In the Jolly Boys Outing, after Raquel has finished speaking to Del on the intercom, she presses a button on the phone. When she does this the wall moves.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, When the gang realise that the trains aren’t running they begin to argue. Alan stops the argument and reminds them that the coach company has promised to send them a new coach early next morning. That being the case, why were they going to catch a train? They should have known they had to stay in Margate overnight.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, When we cut to the scene showing the Trotter’s in bed in the Villa Bella look carefully at the top left of the picture. You will notice a boom mike moving around a little. You have to look carefully since the scene is filmed in darkness.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, in the scene where Rodney kicks the ball at the policeman, as Del turns to Rodney to ask him for the ball we see Boycie and some others pass by on their way to the coach. But a split second later, as Del finishes his line and the camera turns to Rodney holding the ball, we see Boycie already on the coach sitting at a window seat!Fast mover Boycie!

In the Jolly Boys Outing, when Del and Rodney are sat down together reminissing, Del tells him a story of when he and Jumbo Mills had a partnership selling sea food outside a pub. I think this is confirmed in who wants…millionaire when Jumbo wants to take him to Australia to help run his car business.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, When Del, Rodney and Albert have to stay the evening in Margate there are several references to how cold it is. Yet at Raquel’s flat the window is wide open, enabling Del to throw the suitcase out.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, the video version cuts out the scene of a singer singing before Raquel and Ramondo come on stage.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, when the coach reaches the Half way house- it must be in the morning as Albert was moaning about leaving early! – then the “Boys” have a few sherbets, when they leave however Densil (I think) is talking about the state of the coach driver and claims “And its only 11O’clock”. That being the case what was the pub doing open?

In the Jolly Boys Outing, Raquel indicates that she has no family left, but in “Heroes and Villains” she visits her mum and dad whom she hasn’t seen for years.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, there’s a scene where Del, Rodney and Albert are walking down a street trying to find a hotel to stay in overnight. Now, if you look at a sign over one of the houses it clearly says “CRESTA CABS” – which would later become the name of the cab company in John Sullivan’s “Roger Roger”.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, when the cassette radio starts smoking Del decides it would be sensible to abandon ship at this point the coach is filling up with smoke. The next coach scene shows everyone jumping off the coach but there is no smoke seen at all in the coach.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, when the coach explodes the front and sides blow up followed by the back of the coach, after seeing Rodney in the phone booth an explosion of an untouched side of the coach re-explodes showing the scene was shot by several cameras but only one explosion.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, we see Del struggling with the pen in the villa bella to sign in, why didn’t he just use the one in his inside pocket that he gives to Raquel in the club?

In the Jolly Boys Outing, on the official BBC video Del and Rodders go to the night-club, you straight away see Del and Rodders sitting around the table with Boycie and Mike etc, but in the original screen showing the part when they go to the club has about 10 mins of Del and Rodney eating and discussing Cassandra. Any cuts like mentioned are generally due to the copyright on the background music.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, Ericka Hoffman was the women at the candy floss stand. Yet she also had been in “From Prussia with Love” playing the pregnant German girl.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, when the girl (trainee hostess) in Bellas place is showing the lads up to their room the audible steps are out of sink with the actual steps she takes.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, In the scene when the coach arrives in Margate accompanied with the song “Everybody’s talking” . As Rodney nuges Del to wake him up if you lip-read you can see Del saying “**** off Rodney”.

In the Jolly Boys Outing, in the scene where uncle albert and rodney are in bed together, arguing & bickering. if you notice above the bed is an ashtray that vanishes for no reason.

Rodney Come Home Episode Review

Brief: Rodney has to sleep on the settee because Raquel hasn’t yet agreed to ‘stamp Del’s card’. To make Cassandra jealous Rodney arranges a date with Tanya from the Peckham – Exhaust Centre. He backs out before going through with it but somehow Cassandra still finds out. Del’s heart is in the right place, pity about his brain.

Rodney seems to have it all, a beautiful wife, a cushy job at the father-in-law’s printing company, and a lovely home. Del is very happy too, Raquel has agreed to live with him having returned from a theatre tour of America’s east coast.

All is not well between Rodney and Cassandra, however. Cassie has become a workaholic, and Rodney cannot understand why she wants to attend work functions instead of cooking his tea.

Del, worried for his brother’s happiness (and the loss of cheap printing perks through Rodney’s job) plays cupid. Rodney consequently finds himself homeless for the third time in 18 months.

Episode Observations

In Rodney Come Home, In the scene where Del is walking to Cassie’s flat, when he walks out of the van, you can see a building behind saying “Agricultural Machinery”. This is Peckham, which is only 3 miles from Central London, and the nearest field is 10 miles away. Surely there wouldnt be a tractor factory in the middle of South London.

In Rodney Come Home, when uncle Albert goes to pore himself a drink, Raquel walks in and uncle says he his looking for his slippers… well the drink he pours changes when the cameras look back at the drink… the amount goes from a little bit to half a glass.

In Rodney Come Home, On the back of the video case, there are two pictures, the top one is from Fatal Extraction and on the back of Fatal Extraction there is a picture from Rodney Come Home

In Rodney Come Home, When Cassandra throws Rodney out telling him to find one of these many women who would want him, it shows him storming to the garage. He comes flying out on his bicycle but leaves the well illuminated garage wide open to thieves!

In Rodney Come Home, Del Boy has aged quite quickly since The Jolly Boys Outing 1 year before. In just 1 year his sideburns, and his hair at the front has gone grey and his face looks a lot older than it did in The Jolly Boys Outing, when he had not one grey hair on his head and his face looked like a child’s.

In Rodney come home, there is a part were del boy has told albert to look horrified with rodney for going to the flicks with a girl called Tanya. Albert keeps mistiming his horrified expresions, and if you look closely you can see Del boy unable to keep a straight face, even when he`s telling Albert off.

In Rodney Come Home, When Albert is about to pour a brandy on the sly, he is stopped having poured only a tiny drop when Raquel walks in and he claims that he’s looking for his slippers. On the next shot of the table the glass is nearly two thirds full, a lot more than he actually poured.

In Rodney Come Home, Del who comes storming in , when the door slams shut the dividing ‘wall’ between the entrance hall and the kitchen nearly falls over! A proper wall surely wouldn’t do that!

In Rodney Come Home, When Albert helps himself to Del’s brandy, he is startled by Raquel after pouring just a tiny drop, and starts pretending he is looking for his slippers. When Raquel enters the room, the brandy glass is suddenly half full!

In Rodney Come Home, At the beginning of this episode, Del and uncle Albert are arguing on the escalator in a shopping centre, but as they come into view neither of them seem to be talking at all as their lips aren’t moving.

In Rodney Come Home, When Rodney leaves his flat after having quarrelled with Cassandra, he has a bottle of ketchup in his bag. Outside his garage he throws the bag onto the ground with such force that the bottle would normally have been smashed. But when he arrives at Del’s flat, he gets it out of the bag unbroken.

Miami Twice – American Dream Episode review

Brief: Rodney receives his “Maxwell Money” from the printing firm’s pension fund. Del suggests he buys two tickets to Miami for him and Cassandra. When she can’t go he suggests who could take her place as well. He is in a bit of bother about some Romanian Riesling and needs to lay low for a while.

At Damien Trotter’s christening (much to Rodney’s horror), Del strikes a cushdy deal with the Vicar to sell pre-blessed wine around the country.

Rodney is living with Del and Albert on week days, and with Cassandra at weekends, on the advice of a Relate councillor.

Del organises a ‘two for one’ holiday for the Trotter clan, knowing full well that Cassandra will not be able to make it. When the brothers arrive in Miami, the family of mafioso boss Vincenzo Ochetti spot Del – who bears a striking resemblance to their Don.

Soon realising they are not simply being shown American hospitality, Del and Rodney flee… aided and abetted by Boycie, Marlene and their baby Tyler who are also in the states.

Upon a safe return to Peckham, they find dozens of crates of wine, which were deemed unfit for Holy Communion.

Episode Observation

In Miami Twice (part 1), when Del asks Rodney if he is still going to Miami after Cassandra says no, Rodney replies “possibly” as he walks off, you can see a srudio light blurrs the camera(YOU CAN SEE THE BLUR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN AT THE TOP).

In Miami Twice (part 1), the windows inside the church don’t match the windows outside the church, this can be seen when Del walks into the church after Mike reminds him about paying for the christening do at the pub.

In Miami Twice (part 1), Outside the church where Damien is christened, Rodney seems to have a very good tan before he goes to Miami (part 2).

In Miami Twice (part 1), Rodney and Cassandra are seen in the beer garden of the Nags Head with benchs soft lights and Patio.Look at the carpark in Dates when the police pull up to the rear of the nags head it looks a little differant!

In Miami Twice (part 1), Outside the pub after the Christening, Cassie tells Rodders that she is not dressing up as a victorian Maid for anyone – by the time we get round to Heroes and Villains that is precisely what she has done after Damian bought her bank !

Reality:

The church was St John’s Church. Though it was never dedicated as such. It is currently known as the Graet Apostolic Church and is found in Gighgate Road, Kentish Town, next to the forum club.

Miami Twice - oh to be in England Episode Review

Brief: Del Boy and Rodney haven’t been in Miami a day yet they bumped into these nice ‘Family’ boys at the night club and they can stay with them. What they don’t know is that there is a Godfather involved; Don Ochetti, and they are expendable. On the run in the Everglades is not fun, but maybe they will bump into someone they know!

Episode Observations

In Miami Twice (part 2), after rodney tells del he has just seen his double they go and see if they can find him and when del gets to the door way of don ochetis room you can see dels shadow on the wall but as he walks away you can also see another shadow that wasn’t there before.

In Miami Twice (part 2), When Rachael is walking passed the church with Damien in his pram, the vicar is blessing the lorry load of wine. He then informs her that it is the wrong colour(white not red).So why was he blessing it?

In Miami Twice (part 2), Del has his camera stolen and the scene finishes with Del chasing the thief. In the next scene Del not only has his camera back but he also has the thiefs camera!

In Miami Twice (part 2), Don Ocheti is being watched constantly by Police surveilance. If this is so and they assume Del is Don (like they do on the jet ski and at the restaurant), how come they never followed them both when they made a run for it at the end, when they discovered Rico and company were the Mafia?!

In Miami Twice (part 2), When Rodney finally phones Cassandra from Rico’s mansion, listen for Cassandra’s voice as the camera first cuts back to the mansion from the airport. She is saying “Are you alright?”, and you can still hear her saying the “alright” down the telephone line when the picture cuts back to Rodney at the mansion. However, after this, her voice can’t be heard at all down the phone line, even though Rodney is still “replying” to her questions. Very subtle but very noticeable once you’ve spotted it!

In Miami Twice (part 2), at the start of episode, when Rodney is telling Del to take his earphones out, check out the laugh by Del as he realises what Rodney is saying. It is obviously overdubbed, albeit very badly.

In Miami Twice (part 2), you can see….one of the Mafia family breaks into Del and Rodney’s camper van. But at this point they could not have known it was their van because they had not yet spoken to them?

In Miami Twice (part 2), When Del & rodney have just got on Boycie’s boat in the Everglades, Rico is about to try to shoot them. He picks up his gun and passes his glasses across to one of his bodyguards, but the bodyguard drops them. You then see the two men behind Rico laugh.

In Miami Twice (part 2), At the beginning of the episode Delboy asks a local to take a photo of himself and Rodney, the local looks at the camera he owns, then looks at Delboy’s and runs off with it. Although Delboy chases after him we assume Del never catches him, however in the next scene when Delboy and Rodney are hiring the camper van, Delboy, quite clearly has the camera hanging round his neck.

In Miami Twice (part 2), Del’s camera above, If you look in the scene after the camera is stolen. Del has his own and he also has the thief’s small yellow one. Hanging around his neck. So he must have caught him.

In Miami Twice (part 2), just after Del face gets soaked and mucky from falling into the Everglades, Del moans to Rodney about “who put this swamp thing here?” yet his face is now all cleaned up!

In Miami Twice (part 2), When Del bravely falls into the swamp (Everglades) a twig gets caught in his hat. It stays with him until they sit down for the alligator scene. At that point the twig suddenly vanishes.

In Miami Twice (part 2), when Tyler spots Uncle Rodney on the side of the riverbank, somehow the voice doesn’t seem to fit the child.

In Miami Twice (part 2), the BBC video in the shops is edited and is around 6 minutes shorter than the version shown on TV in 1991- This could be due to contractual reasons on the music used.

Fatal Extraction Episode Review

Brief: While Peckham is in the midst of rioting, Del Boy is having trouble with his teeth and with Raquel. She objects to him spending all night at the 1.11 Club. It is no surprise when she leaves him but Del goes straight back into dating. Then he changes his mind he wants to forget about it, but will the scorned woman let him?

Raquel is worried that Santa will be too busy down the 121 Club getting drunk, to provide Damien with any presents.

Rodney raises the problem with Del, who explains he is brokering a deal to get hold of some Russian ex-military Camcorders to make ends meet over Christmas.

Rodney’s marriage is going so well that they have decided to try to have a baby. So much so he’s getting phone calls from Cassie at work, telling him to come home because she’s the right temperature.

Raquel leaves Del, staying at Rodney and Cassandra’s place. Del does what any man would: Organises a date with Beverly, his dentist’s receptionist. He cancels it as soon as he comes to his senses.

A changed man, he invites Raquel back. After drunkenly starting a riot on the estate he sells the Russian gear to both the cops and the robbers.

All seems calm, but Beverly seems to be stalking Del.

Episode Observations

In Fatal Extraction, In response to the comment made by Michael Kilburn above, regarding Rodney holding Damien the wrong way around. This scene never actually took place in this episode, but in “Mother Nature’s Son” previously.

In Fatal Extraction, Whilst the riots are happening there is a shot of the helicopter and you can see that it is raining (Look at the search light). The very next scene is them rioting, but it is not raining.

In Fatal Extraction, how could Albert hear Del singing in the precinct, if as Rodney says ‘He slept through two world wars’.

In Fatal Extraction, The building they use for the casino is the same building they used in ‘Yuppy Love’ for the wine bar. It is known as the old granary in Welsh Back, Bristol.

In Fatal Extraction, watch the scene where Rodney and Cassandra are in bed, just before Damien enters the room. Cassandra still has her themometer in her hand when she leans to cuddle Rodney. She must drop the themometer down the back of the bed, as when her hands are next in view, with NO scene change, she no longer has the themometer.

In Fatal Extraction, when Del goes into the kitchen to find Alberts boiling pants the steam is falling and not rising, clearly a case of dry ice and not steam!

In Fatal Extraction, Raquel gives del boy a really good answer phone and in three years in heroes and villians it’s majorly messed up.

In Fatal Extraction, When Del and Rodney are in the casino, Del says he likes gambling with his mates, Rodney says “and who are your mates?” he runs a few off and when he comes to Boycie he says “oh Boycie, the man that thinks anyone who has a penny less than him is a peasant”. When he says Peasant he stutters.

In Fatal Extraction, When Del steps into the beans that Albert has dropped, he puts his whole foot in. But afterwards, when Albert gives him the ‘Relate’ form he goes to wipe his foot with it. Del’s foot is clearly only half covered in beans!.

In Fatal Extraction, Albert In the market, when Del has Rodney modeling the ski wear, Rodney’s wearing a hat. The logo’s on the left when Trigger says hello but when they cut back to Del and Rodney, the logo’s on the right!.

In Fatal Extraction, Albert says im not going to the window because a brick might come through. Rodney says we’re on the 12th floor. But in ‘Roal Flush’ at the end, near the lift it says 13Th floor. Funny how the flat moves from level to level!.

In Fatal Extraction, during Rodney’s dream sequence at the start, look how Rodney is holding Damien when the camera is behing him. Then when it cuts to the mirror shot, his empty arms are actually held out to the other side to which he was holding Damien. The fact that it’s a mirror shot is a little confusing, but the director definitely gets it wrong on this occasion.

In Fatal Extraction, denzil is telling Del, Mike, Boycie and Trigger how he has been split up from his wife for 7 years, yet in the episode Yuppy Love Denzil is still together with his wife(Corrine). Between these 2 episodes the gap is less then 7 years, meaning the script writers have got the facts wrong.

In Fatal Extraction, Mental Mickey who was in the episode it’s only rock and roll, were Rodders and the boys set up a band is also in Fatal Extraction involved in the Peckham riots. I noticed him in it 3 times just after Del finishes singing.

In Fatal Extraction, (1993) Rodney states he is 31 yrs old, yet in the (1981) episode “big brother”, 12 years earlier he says he’s 23!?

In Fatal Extraction, On the same theme as the great Robbie Williams debate, look at the barmaid serving in the Nag’s Head during the scene in which Del & Boycie are discussing Bronco and the psychiatric hospital (about 1 hour 3 mins into the episode). It’s the blonde one from Steps! (I think her name is Faye)

In Fatal Extraction, When Rodney is told by Del that he will have to deliver the high chair to Beverly (about 1 hour 21 mins into the episode), Del states that the reason he cannot do it himself is because he has “a wife and kid”. A bit of a faux-pas on his part, as him and Raquel have never got married (or so we assume…)

In Fatal Extraction, when Del sounds his horn in the capri ghia, he pushes the centre of the steering wheel. hoever, capri horns are sounded by pushing one of the stalks!

In Fatal Extraction, when Del is trying to remember who his old bird was (it turns out to be Marlene) he says that he took her home to see his mum and dad. In A Losing Streak Del says that his dad left on his 16th birthday, meaning he must have been going out with Marlene when he was 15. Surely that’s a bit young to be buying her a ring (presumably to get engaged), going into a betting shop and booking a holiday together!

In Fatal Extraction, when the riots start, the outside scene shows the block of flats used for Nelson Mandella House clearly is built in a way that the door is on the side of the kitchen and not from the lounge, unlike in “The Sky’s the Limit”, the studio scene on the balcony shows a small window (in the Kitchen wall)

In Fatal Extraction, during the riots outside Nelson Mandella House, the actors used for the riots were from the Old Vic drama school. Famous choirboy Aled Jones was there at the time and is amongst the rioters filmed in that scene.

In Fatal Extraction, you may notice that when the answer machine message is played back at the end it is slightly different to the one actually left earlier on by Del. You’ll have to listen carefully though.

In Fatal Extraction, after Del and Rodney have finished at the casino they go down the market to sell the ski-wear. The scene starts by panning across the market down towards the place where Del’s selling his gear by means of his little side-show. Until the close up shot of Del, all his banter is clearly out of sync with what he is really saying.

In Fatal Extraction, it states that the Trotters live on the 12th floor, but it also shows the lift on one of the older episodes, maybe when Del’s dad makes a return, and it clearly states the 13th floor.

In Fatal Extraction, when Rodney comes into the dentist to see Del about the hamster he looks a bit wind swept with his hair everywhere and when it go back to Rodney his hair is perfect.

Heroes and Villians Episode Review

Brief: Del has been refused a grant to refit his Kitchen, Rodney & Cassandra are on a heavy schedule trying for a baby. Then they get invited to a Fancy dress Party so they attend as Batman & Robin. Trouble is , with a dodgy answer phone no one told them the party was cancelled….. One of the Classics.

Rodney’s fertility schedule is wearing him down. Such is Cassandra’s need to have a baby, he buys her a rabbit, Roger, to care for until a little one arrives.

Del has a shipment of Latvian alarm clocks he can’t shift and his home improvement grant has been rejected.

It’s Rodders’ birthday, and Del buys him a cheap gold bracelet inscribed ‘Rooney’. Finding themselves on a rare boys night out, they dress up as Batman and Robin for a fancy dress party held for a local publican. En route, they prevent Councillor Murray from being mugged.

They arrive at the party, to discover it’s actually a wake, and that ‘fancy dress’ meant ‘dress well’.

The following day Del is awarded a bravery medal for tackling another mugger, and Cassandra has good news: She’s pregnant.

Episode Observations

In Heroes and Villains, In the scene where Del Boy looks at his answer machine and claims “thats the last time I buy anything of that Ronnie Nelson”, its a pity he didnt recall the last time he got tucked up by Ronnie Nelson in Dange UXD regarding the video recorders.Maybe he would have thought twice about buying them!

In Heroes and Villains, If you look carefully at the copy of the Daily Mirror that Rodney’s reading the headline says ‘Freddie Starr ate my Trotter’! its true, have a look!

In Heroes and Villains, When Del and rodney are going to the party and the van breaks down, Del first tells rodney to get out of the van and check out what is wrong. Then when Del gets out, rodney gets out aswell. Although he was reluctant to get out before. Then Del tells Rodney to get back in because he looks like a ‘right wally’, Even though he told him to get out in the first place!

In Heroes and Villains, on the bit were they break down in the van in there costume ,theres no front window in the van.

In Heroes and Villains, When Rodney and Del are in the Garage in “Time On Our Hands”, Rodney mentions the dream he had “a couple of weeks ago”. He also says that Cassy lost the baby “a fortnight ago”. In “Heros & Villains” Rodney has the dream before he even tells everyone that they are expecting a baby, so if what Rodney says is true, technically they would have already lost the baby before he had told anyone about it.

In Heroes and Villains, Del’s hair is medium brown, whereas in the previous episode “Heroes And Villains” it is jet black.

In Heroes and Villains, This is the second time i’ve noticed this, the other time is in Fatal Extraction. When Del is pretending to be hurt by Rodney’s accusation, he says “here i am with my child and my WIFE gone away…”. Is there something Mr Sullivan forgot to tell us?

In Heroes and Villains, at the scene were Rodney is geting chased by the villain watch the villain start to slow down before he’s out of view (behind the houses) it happens a few times before Del decides to cut him off.

In Heroes and Villains, Rauquel visits her mum and dad whom she hasn’t seen for years, yet in “Jolly boys outing” she indicates that she has no family left.

In Heroes and Villains, Del is turned down a council grant to do up the kitchen but in “Mother Natures Son”, he has brought the flat off the council. So why would he get one as a private owner?, and not a tenant?

In Heroes and Villains, at the time Damien appears in the lounge with a baseball cap on asking Rodney if he wants to play war, the shot shows him with his cap slanted to the left, next shot its to the right and finally it ends up being straight on his head. (He was obviously quite fidgety behind the scenes.)

In Heroes and Villains, there seems a very long time lapse between the grand entrants into the main room at the fancy dress ball and the point where Del and Rodney meet Boycie in the hall way.

In Heroes and Villains, In Heroes and Villains Rodney buys Cassandra a rabbit because she’s feeling broody yet in 3 Men, a Woman and a Baby she says she’s allergic to fur.

In Heroes and Villains, When Del and Rodney run in to the main room, there is a group of guests behind them, surely they would of said something about it not being a fancy dress ball.

In Heroes and Villains, Was Rodney’s Nightmare at the start of the episode based on Back to the Future Part 2 ? It looked very like a parody of the ‘Biffworld’ scene.

The original script featured a hidden treasure sub-plot. ‘I dropped the idea but kept the Batman and Robin image. The missing treasure eventually became the Harrison watch, which made Del and Rodney millionaires’ says Sullivan.
