This is going to make you laugh, really, but by way of distracting a patient under surgery there is nothing more distracting that a good episode of Only Fools and Horses and Batman and Robin seems a very popular choice.
Just imagine that, your about to go under the knife and you suddenly burst out laughing as Del and Rodney dressed up as Batman and Robin come screaming into the morning relatives wake “dinna dinna dinna dinna batman!”
Some people think television is mind-numbing and under these circumstances and they could be right.
Doctors believe that watching shows such as Only Fools And Horses during surgery could allow many more patients to go without general anaesthetic.
The screen is on an arm attached to the ceiling, out of the way of the surgeons. Of course not everyone wants to watch Only Fools and Horses episodes. Men’s top choices are Top Gear, David Attenborough’s Blue Planet and The Guide to Successful Pole Fishing, while women prefer Mamma Mia!, The Sound of Music, as well as a Only Fools and Horses.
Batman and Robin Episode Popular Choice
They have found that patients are far happier to choose a local anaesthetic instead if they can have the distraction of a DVD during surgery. One patient, James McLaren, 69, chose The Blue Planet. After his operation he said: ‘It went very well. There’s various movements and maybe some noise, but it was fine. The Blue Planet is very relaxing. I don’t mind being awake at all.’
The surgeon leading the way in this is 51 year old Dr Pace. He tells us ‘Some patients are almost disappointed because the operation is finished before the end of the film’
Of course fans of the show are well aware that the Batman and Robin episode was called Heroes and Villians.
