NIGHT THE RITZ PICTURE HOUSE<\/p>\n<p>External shot of the picture house at night, young Raymond is bringing in the portable billboard.<\/p>\n<p>INT. NIGHT. THE RITZ PICTURE HOUSE<\/p>\n<p>Joanie and Reanie and are in the staff cloak room putting on their coats.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. If I were you I\u2019d tell Reg, let him sort him out.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Oh leave it out Reane.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. Well what does this fella want with Freddy?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. I dunno but nothing good that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. And you really don\u2019t know where he is?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. No course I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. Look it\u2019s not my place to ask and usually I wouldn\u2019t but you\u2019re my best mate and I\u2019m worried about ya, are them rumours about you and Freddy true?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. (flustered at the question) No, I told ya, we just\u2026.got on. Anyway I\u2019m not like that.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. What about Guissepe?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. He was just a friend, Rean, you know that.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. Well the Italian Stallion wasn\u2019t been very friendly that night he tried to force himself on you in the back of his car.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. And that\u2019s why I can\u2019t tell Reg, you know how he over reacts, look at the state he left him in.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. Well from what you\u2019ve told me it don\u2019t sound like this fella is going to let it drop until he gets what he wants.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. I\u2019ve got a number.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. What number?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Before Freddy left he gave me a number.<\/p>\n<p>REANIE. Problem solved then, girl. THE TROTTERS FLAT.<\/p>\n<p>Joan is sitting at the table doing her make-up. Grandad is in the chair watching the news.<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. You got work today Joanie, love?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Yeah, just a couple of hours at the town hall then im at the flicks tonight.<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. Will you be home for dinner?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Yeah should be.<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. There\u2019s a nice leg of pork in the fridge<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Is that your way of telling me you would like pork for dinner, Ted?<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. Well, yeah.<\/p>\n<p>She smiles.<\/p>\n<p>Del enters from the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>DEL. You working on a Saturday, mum?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Yeah, we can\u2019t all stay in bed till Grandstand, like your father.<\/p>\n<p>DEL. Yeah he\u2019s a lazy git ain\u2019t he, I\u2019m not gonna be like that when I\u2019m his age, I\u2019m gonna be wheeling and dealing, I\u2019ll be a millionaire one day you know, mum.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. I know you will darlin\u2019. You won\u2019t forget your old mum when your rich will ya son?<\/p>\n<p>DEL. Course I won\u2019t, you\u2019ll have the best things money can buy, you\u2019ll be able to say goodbye to all that second hand clobber for a start, yeah, all your gear will come from the finest of tailors.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Oh Saville Row?<\/p>\n<p>DEL. Well yeah if you like, and you granddad, you can say goodbye to black and white and hello to glorious technicolour.<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. What\u2019s glorious technicolour?<\/p>\n<p>DEL. It\u2019s colour telly innit.<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. Colour telly! What will they think of next?<\/p>\n<p>Reg enters in his pyjama bottoms and a vest.<\/p>\n<p>REG. What\u2019s all the noise about?<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. Dels getting me a colour telly.<\/p>\n<p>REG. You\u2019ve already got a colour telly, look it\u2019s mahogany.<\/p>\n<p>GRANDAD. Yeah but the pictures not colour is it?<\/p>\n<p>REG. You filling these twos head\u2019s with your fantasy\u2019s again?<\/p>\n<p>DEL. Nothing wrong with dreaming, dad.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. That\u2019s right, my mum said to me on her deathbed, you\u2019ve got to have a dream, Joanie. And she was right, you have got to have a dream, don\u2019t let no one tell you different, Del.<\/p>\n<p>REG. (sarcastic) Well ain\u2019t that lovely, speaking of death beds, I\u2019m now going back to mine, so keep the row down.<\/p>\n<p>EXT. NIGHT THE PICTURE HOUSE.<\/p>\n<p>We see the picture house then we pan back to see the older and younger man are waiting in the car for Joan.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Im done with messing around, boy. We get answers tonight.<\/p>\n<p>YOUNGER MAN. What if they\u2019re not the right answers?<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Then the old man gets it, and if I still don\u2019t get what I want, the son gets it, and if the silly cow is stupid enough to keep her mouth shut after all that, she\u2019ll get it.<\/p>\n<p>YOUNGER MAN. What if she\u2019s telling the truth and she really don\u2019t know where Freddy is?<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Then she\u2019s in trouble cos she\u2019s the only lead of got, and I\u2019ll pull tight on it if I have to, you know what I mean, boy?<\/p>\n<p>Just then the back door opens, the two men swing round in time to see Joan shutting the door.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN.(attempting to be assertive but clearly very nervous) Drive.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Come to your senses have you, love?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Do you wanna hear what I\u2019ve got to say or not?<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Certainly I do.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Then drive away from here.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. You\u2019re the boss.<\/p>\n<p>The car pulls away.<\/p>\n<p>EXT. NIGHT. THE DOCKS<\/p>\n<p>We see the car pull into shot and come to a stop near the rivers edge. The area is deserted and a low smog hangs in the air.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. So what are we doing here then?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Get out<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. (to younger man) you wait here.<\/p>\n<p>Joan and the older man get out and go to the back of the car where they face each other.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Come on then Mrs Trotter, tell me what I want to know.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Freddy Robdal moved away from the area almost a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. This I already know.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Before he left we had\u2026\u2026a thing, I loved him and part of me always will, but I love my family more, especially my boys and I will not see them hurt.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Carry on.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. When he left he offered to tell me where he was going but I turned him down, too tempting I suppose, if I\u2019d have known where he was I\u2019d always be wondering what he\u2019s doing or who\u2019s he\u2019s with, I wanted to try and forget about him.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. It\u2019s a start, give it to me.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. You have to understand that family comes first, my family and that\u2019s why I\u2019m doing this\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>She goes to hand it over but then screws it up and throws it in the river.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. You stupid, stupid bitch.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. You can do what you want to me but you leave my family out of it, it\u2019s me who stopped you finding Freddy, me.<\/p>\n<p>The older man scowls and grabs Joan roughly by the arm.<\/p>\n<p>VOICE (out of shot) You don\u2019t wanna do that, cocker.<\/p>\n<p>Freddy Robdal walks out of the smog.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Freddy!<\/p>\n<p>The older man lets Joan go and pushes her to the ground. As Freddy walks past the passenger side of the car, the younger man gets out. Freddy hasn\u2019t seen him.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. You\u2019re a difficult man to track down.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Do I know you?<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. I don\u2019t know but your going to wish you didn\u2019t, boy.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Harry Gilbert isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Right first time Freddy, well done.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. You run the florist on Islington high street<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Bravo.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Well I say florist, most of your profits come from the illegal bookmakers out the back though don\u2019t it, Harry?<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Funny you should mention that Freddy, because my profits are what I wanted to see you about. You see, they\u2019ve taken a bit of a hit recently.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. I\u2019m gutted for you.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Not as gutted as me old son, imagine how you\u2019d feel if you came home one night and found some bastard had blown your safe into tiny little pieces and made off with all your cash. What would you do?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. I\u2019d probably go looking for me.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Spot on, and here I am. I expect you\u2019ll be telling me you had nothing to do with it?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. No. I done it. I even drank the last of your milk on the way out.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Why?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. I was thirsty.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. No I mean why me?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. It\u2019s nothing personal; it\u2019s what I do. I\u2019m sure you understand, one criminal to another.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Oh I do Freddy, I do, I\u2019m still going to get him to cut you up though.<\/p>\n<p>The older man motions to the younger man, who has drawn his knife.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. I think you should think about this before you do something you might regret.<\/p>\n<p>As Freddy finishes speaking we hear the distant noise a motorcycle travelling at speed, it comes into shot as it careers around the corner, we can again hear the rider shouting that it has no breaks. Freddy moves but it hit\u2019s the younger man and sends him into the car and knocks him out.<\/p>\n<p>The rider gets up and dusts himself off.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Are you alright?<\/p>\n<p>MAN. Yeah, yeah I think so, what about your mate?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. He\u2019s alright, he can sleep it off, go on you get out of here before the old bill get involved.<\/p>\n<p>MAN. Im sorry about ya motor, I only bought the bike tonight, I didn\u2019t know it was knackered.<\/p>\n<p>With that he runs off, every now and then looking back at the wreckage of the bike.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. That\u2019s a nasty dent he\u2019s left there.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. (trying to be friendlier now his back up is out cold) I\u2019ll get it fixed.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Can you get this fixed as well?<\/p>\n<p>As the older man goes to ask \u2018what\u2019? Freddy punches him in the face and knocks him to the ground. He goes over to him and picks him up by the lapels, as he is about to hit him again Joan stops him.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Freddy, no.<\/p>\n<p>Freddy lets go.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. I think you better get back in your car while you still can.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. I think you might be right.<\/p>\n<p>Freddy walks with the man over to the car. The younger man is coming around.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. (to younger man) get in<\/p>\n<p>YOUNGER MAN. But\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. Just get in.<\/p>\n<p>They both get in. Freddy goes over to the driver side and stops the older man from closing the door. He takes a wad of notes from his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. This is half of what was taken from your safe. I reckon that makes us even. I\u2019ll make it known your gaff is off limits BUT, know this, it\u2019s only because of her your not doing the backstroke with a broken neck, if you ever go near ANY of the Trotters again you won\u2019t have so much trouble finding me next time, I promise you that, cocker.<\/p>\n<p>OLDER MAN. In the scheme of things that seems a fail deal.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Now get out of here.<\/p>\n<p>He slams the door and they drive off over the broken bike. Freddy turns to Joan.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Why didn\u2019t you call me and tell me you we\u2019re in trouble?<\/p>\n<p>JOANIE. I didn\u2019t want you to get hurt and I didn\u2019t want to go through all\u2026\u2026.that, again. Yeah, I know the situation, come on, I\u2019ll give you a lift home, Reg will be wondering where you\u2019ve got to.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Huh!<\/p>\n<p>EXT NIGHT. OUTSIDE THE SIR WALTER RALEIGH HOUSE<\/p>\n<p>Freddy\u2019s jaguar pulls up.<\/p>\n<p>JOANIE. So you\u2019ve been living in North London?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Yeah, I\u2019m moving on again soon though.<\/p>\n<p>JOANIE. Another job I suppose?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Yeah, this ones going to be golden.<\/p>\n<p>JOANIE.(smiling) I don\u2019t wanna know, Freddy.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Its probably best you don\u2019t. So, You haven\u2019t got my number anymore then.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. No<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. And I\u2019ll be changing it when I move.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. I expect you will.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Do you want\u2026..<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Thank you for tonight Freddy.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. My pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. I better get in.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>She gives him a kiss on the cheek and goes to get out.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Joan.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. Yeah?<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. How\u2019s Rodney?<\/p>\n<p>JOAN. He\u2019s very well thank you.<\/p>\n<p>FREDDY. Good.<\/p>\n<p>JOAN.
