Boycie, the dodgy car dealer from Only Fools And Horses, was born and brought up in Peckham and attended the Martin Luther King Secondary Modern. Challis is the son of a civil servant, who grew up in one of South London\u2019s more salubrious suburbs and went to boarding school.<\/p>\n<p>In Being Boycie, the first, captivating instalment of his autobiography, Challis charts his childhood and the career path that saw him achieve overnight success after almost 25 years in show business. It\u2019s a candid, self-deprecating account of disappointment, near-misses and occasional highs; and a lifelong quest for his father\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n<p>Alec Challis was the taciturn son of a Sheffield steelworker, who did well at school and graduated to a job with the Admiralty in the West Country, where son John was born in 1941. When Alec was transferred to Whitehall shortly afterwards, the family followed, making John one of the few children to be evacuated to London during the war.<\/p>\n<p>Father was pedantic and cautious, ever anxious to disguise his proletarian Yorkshire roots. Mum Joan was more extrovert and flamboyant, involved in amateur dramatics. She encouraged John\u2019s love of music and mimicry, much to her husband\u2019s disgust.<\/p>\n<p>Challis recalls overhearing bitter arguments between his parents about their son\u2019s theatrical inclination. Although this is by no means a self-pitying misery memoir, the only emotions his father ever showed him were anger and disapproval, punctuated with regular beatings with the back of a brush.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the couple were to grow apart and Joan took up with \u2018a moustache-twirling visitor, known to me only as \u201cUncle Charlie\u201d, who often came round in his sports car to play tennis with her. He would bring small presents for me, and linger in the house while I played in the garden.\u2019<\/p><div class=\"d7386eeb5bdcd2f43c1295b58ceaf130\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:5px 0 5px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ofah2-response -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1609637348681190\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"5593259115\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At home: The real John Challis<\/p>\n<p>Challis maintains he based Boycie on a blazered chancer he knew later in life, but the suspicion lingers that the character contained more than a hint of Uncle Charlie. To his father\u2019s dismay, he left school without taking his A-levels and drifted into a dead-end job with a local estate agent. When that didn\u2019t work out, he drove a grocer\u2019s van before joining a touring theatrical company &#8211; his driving licence counting for more than his acting ability.<\/p>\n<p>It was the start of a provincial Odyssey familiar to generations of actors &#8211; combining scene-shifting with bit parts in half-empty, long-defunct regional theatres. But it eventually led him to the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he worked alongside Ian Holm and Malcolm McDowell.<\/p>\n<p>Although Challis realised his dream of playing the West End, television increasingly paid the bills. His TV career took in just about every popular Sixties and Seventies soap and drama, from Z-Cars to Coronation Street, specialising in detective constables and dubious commercial travellers.<\/p>\n<p>It was TV that cost him his big break in the movies. His agent secured an audition for a part in The Beatles\u2019 Magical Mystery Tour. Challis recounts a star-struck interview with Lennon and McCartney in their office in Bond Street. He got the job, even though he told them he preferred the Stones.<\/p>\n<p>But he had to turn the role down because the BBC wouldn\u2019t release him from his contract playing a rag trade spiv in The Newcomers.<\/p>\n<p>All the time, his contemporaries were achieving stardom. But if Challis was envious, it doesn\u2019t show. He toured a Tom Stoppard play in apartheid South Africa and fetched up for a while in New York.<\/p>\n<p>At one stage he was reduced to working as a landscape gardener. Challis took consolation in sex, bedding a string of successful and less-successful actresses, including Shirley Anne Field; Julie Goodyear, who played Bet Lynch in Corrie; and Sally Farmiloe, later to achieve tabloid fame as one of Jeffrey Archer\u2019s mistresses.<\/p>\n<p>He came late to love, losing his virginity at the age of 19 to a much older actress in a theatrical boarding house. She told him she was pregnant and he had to borrow \u00a3100 to pay her off. Subsequently he learned it was a scam.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being married four times, and having a sex life which \u2018would challenge an amorous jackrabbit\u2019, he\u2019s never been able to father a child because of a subterranean sperm count. In fact, that\u2019s about the only thing he\u2019s got in common with Boycie. They\u2019ve both spent their life firing blanks.<\/p>\n<p>Being Boycie is a must-read for fans of Only Fools.
