Only Fools and Horses Boycie Character is one of the much loved characters in our faovrite sitcom. In every series he has always been the one to challenge the snob in Del and Rodney.
But at what point was this character created by John Sullivan? Todays episode takes a trip to the year before John penned the series one of Only Fools and Horses.
As many of you would of enjoyed the excellent Boycie-and-Marlene UK tour in the past and you have probably enjoyed the incites from John Challis’ book Being Boycie. Well today’s video shows you the clips he was referring to back in 1980
It starts with an Only Fools and Horses Boycie & Marlene Interview aka John Challis and Sue Holderness.
This is a great moment from an Evening With Boycie & Marlene where John Challis reveals where the Boycie character comes from. Inspired by Citizen Smith character by Only Fools and Horses creator John Sullivan.
It’s always a joy to receive these insights and gems from the stars themselves.
The Boycie character was conceived in John Sullivan’s mind back in 1980 when he wrote a script for Citizen Smith called Letter of the Law, which strangely enough is similar to an Only Fools and Horses episode called Legs of the Law.

In 1981 in Only Fools and Horses Season 1 Episode 2 the character now as a car salesman is very much the same as in Citizen Smith. It has worked well ever since and with Marlene by his side introduced into the episode Let Sleeping Dogs Lie and then again in From Prussia With Love, its hard to imagine an Only Fools and Horses episode without Boycie and Marlene
