Episode Observations
- In If they could Just before Kenneth Mcdonald passed away, he told the producers not to say that his character had died so they said he was i prison.
- In If they could when Del leaves rodney and cassandra in the flat after asking rodney to stay in, they go into the bedroom, the telly is off and there is music on. when Rodney answers the phone to jonathon ross the telly is on full volume.
- In If they could there is a scene where it shows Goldrush playing in the pub (where boycie, trig etc see Del), as it zooms towards the telly, in the bottom right of the screen you can see the actor that plays Maczine in Coronation Street posing as an extra!!
- In If they could see us now, has a clock on the wall of Dels flat which is clearly a BBC prop reused from Denzils flat in “Who’s a pretty boy”.
- In If they could see us now, Rodney is seen abroad yet in who wants to be a millionaire rodney is not allowed a passport as he smoked some illegal drugs.
- In If they could see us now, when del leaves rodney and cassandra in the flat after asking rodney to stay in, they go into the bedroom, the telly is off and there is music on. when rodney answers the phone to jonathon ross the telly is on full volume.
- In If they could see us now, In this episode the Capris registration is CCR 412W yet in He aint heavy hes my uncle the registration is UYD 177R!
- In If they could see us now, there is a scene where Micky Pearce is in the pub about to make a prank call to Del, if you look closly over Boycies shoulder you an see that the wall paper is not straight!!!
- In If they could see us now, when Rodney and Cassandra come back from the restaurant Del talks about Grandad having his first fit in that bed but how could he because the bed in ‘If they could see us now?’ is a double and the one Grandad slept in ‘Homesick’ was a single.
- In If they could see us now, When Del calls Rodney in the flat when he is appearing in the TV show Goldrush, Del has 20 seconds to speak to Rodney, the time that they actually spent on the phone was 30 seconds!
- In If they could see us now, Rodney is talking to Del about Uncle Albert, and he says that Albert could not go on holiday with them because he didn’t have a passport. However, in To Hull and Back Del asks Albert if he has brought all the passports when he gets to Hull and Albert says they are in his bag. Albert would obviously had to have had one when he went to Amsterdam.
- In If they could see us now, John Sullivan brings in another past link by scripting Elsie Patridge from “Sickness and Health” as being Alberts partener before he died.
- In If they could see us now, when they are flying in Concord the seat behind Rodney is empty Then when you see it again Damien is in it.
If They Could See Us Now Script
Major problems
ITV made it difficult by pulling out there support for the agreement of Chris Tarrant and the use of the popular quiz game “Who wants to be a Millionaire”. Add to this the difficult fact that the episodehad to start with the Trotters as Millionaires, then with great sadness Uncle Albert had died so the script needed to cover his sad loss and then before filming the episode, long term character Mike Fisher also passed away. Finally the critics mad no effort to make allowances and so this didn’t have the start to a new trilogy expected.
Interesting Facts
A sketch involving Rodney and a dirty mag was also missed out of the final version.
Also when Del and Rodney were in the office, Del leans on the side of a printer which spools loads of paper all over the floor, this never made it to the final cut.
In the trailers for this episode a stretch 3 wheeled van was shown but never made the final cut. It never realy existed, just a superimposed picture.
This episode was dedicated to the memory of Buster Merryfield (1920-1999) and Kenneth McDonald (1950-2001).
The producers had to say Mike was arrested for deforging the brewery because Kenneth McDonald didn’t want them to say he had died
On gold when Cassandra comes out as a policewoman it’s an instrumental piece playing on dvd its song for the lovers. Does anyone know what the instrumental music is?
I wonder if Perry will ever discover the original script for this episode with parts written for Uncle Albert, Mike Fisher and Chris Tarrant.
I hope he does.
What a shame they ruined the most perfect ending to the trotters becoming millionaires in Time on our Hands. Still If They Could See Us Now was a good episode.
Whoever said this doesn’t know their immigration rules. Clearly, Australia has certain criteria on visa applications that have to be met. Does not mean you cannot travel anywhere else in the world.

David, why did you publish your address here?
What’s the song that’s playing in the pub when Del and Rodney are talking about the flat being overcrowded ? (The scene were Del tells Rodney that don’t solve anything and points at the drink and Rodney says it’s only water).
Can’t Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue
What was the song played at the Goldrush game show?
Wasn’t it Gold by Spandau Ballet used on Goldrush?
Shame as it was rumoured the script was written for Chris Tarrant and “Who want to be a Millionairre” to air. At the last minute ITV couldnt agree terms and so they invented an imaginery game show instead with Jonathan Ross
Thanks for the info! Happy New Year to you!
Yeah I remember that they were going to do it on who wants to be a millionaire. Didn’t matter though I loved this episode!
Happy new year and a new episode for us all to look forward to! cant wait 2014 Del boys triumphant comeback. Lovely Jubbly
Same to you Rob and all on this site have a Happy New Year and we’ll all be counting down to when the Trotters make Tv watchable once again I’m so excited about it. 2014 the year Only Fools returns bring it on.All the best. – Ashton
It’s ‘Gold’ by Spandau Ballet :)
“•In If they could see us now, Rodney is seen abroad yet in who wants to be a millionaire rodney is not allowed a passport as he smoked some illegal drugs.”
Incorrect – Rodney was not allowed a VISA to work in Australia – if he was not a allowed a passport – how did he go to Spain in “it never rains” and “the unlucky winner is”?
Or Miami in Miami twice.
Definitely the worst episode of all. Just horrible to have the Trotters’ lose all their money. How I wish they stopped at “Time On Our Hands.”
It was a good episode I thought. You telling me you didn’t laugh when Trig said karaoke version and said ‘Cos del said he would give me a lift to pub’ even though he has to walk past the pub to get to their flat. Rodney telling John Ross to p… off. I couldn’t stop laughing! Rodders as Russel Crowe.
Time on our hands was almost certainly the best ending, however when you watch the trilogy from 2001 onwards again they are quite funny, and have memorable moments.
And I am confident the new episode is really going to be a classic again and will be something special which will have all us fans glad that Del boy is back.
Hurry up March isn’t too long……….!
Don’t how it was received badly it was hillarious and well written ”Del saying JFK was in a terrible state when he was shot” was predictable but still funny. Trigger saying he can hear voices before he goes into court and Boycie saying ”It’s gonna be one of them days”. Rodney as Russel Crowe and Del forcing them out of the flat was priceless, Del mistaking Cassandra for a police officer and nearly having a connery,”This time last week we were millionaires” Rodney telling Jonathon Ross to piss off,Trigger at the flat and says ”It’s Mozarts Symphony in D-Minor its a kareoke version” Del reminicing and saying Grandad had his first stroke in the same bed while Rodney and Cassandra are trying to get intimate, Ending up at the wrong funeral, Better stop before I start to ravel TBH without Albert and Mike it did a great job it probably would of been better received if they were in it.
This has just been voted the most watched television show of the decade in the UK, even beating all sports events!
