I reviewed all the historical Ordnance Survey Maps for the area and I think Peckham Spring issues from the rear of No. 86 Clayton Road. Quite a statement to receive fom Only Fools and Horses fan Chris Nolan regarding the Peckham Spring referred to in the episode Mother Nature’s Son in 1992. So we decided to ask Chris to explain his theory
On the Trail of Peckham Spring
Where does one start such a search? I tried by stripping back the years and all the urban sprawl, which cover over all the pre-existing natural features. Readers are encouraged to check out an excellent website if they haven’t done so already called Old-Maps.co.ukClick on go to the maps, then type Peckham in the search box
Select the 1873 to 1875 map on the right hand side, and then enhance the zoom.
Just south of screen centre is revealed the small squiggle of a spring, emanating from a point source and heading southwards towards a railwayline and Peckham Rye. Browse more recent maps at the same location and the feature appears to emanate from what is now the rear garden of No. 86 Clayton Road. In true Del Boy fashion, selected internet searches suggests a potentially bigger storey – Peckham Rye – Peckham Rithe in 1520 could refer to a small stream. Peckham Rye – a site for one of Boudicca’s battles etc. what used to go on at Uncle Alberts allotment way back when? I know this is not Uncle Alberts allotment, its just a nerdy little paperchase – readers are cautioned against turning up at the front door of No.86 wielding empty baby bottles! – they could go round the back and jump the fence – he who dares wins Rodney.
